Dehradun, Sep 26 (PTI) An alleged attempt to abduct a 45-year-old woman in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun turned out to be an intimidation bid linked to a dispute over a Rs 7.5 lakh dairy deal, with police arresting a 19-year-old woman and launching a search for four others, an official said on Saturday.
Dehradun Superintendent of Police (Rural) Jaya Baloni said Chahat alias Annu, a resident of Raipur, was arrested in connection with the incident that took place around 6.45 am on Wednesday at Nala Pani Chowk.
According to police, Chahat and one of the accused, Deepak Paswan, had struck a deal to purchase Sushma Verma’s dairy in the Bhaniyawala area of Athurwala for Rs 7.5 lakh and paid Rs 5 lakh in cash.
During questioning, Chahat allegedly told police that at the time of the deal, the accused were informed that the cows at the dairy produced 150 litres of milk a day. However, they later found that the actual milk production was much lower, police said.
Chahat subsequently demanded that Verma return the money, and when she allegedly hesitated, Chahat and Paswan conspired to recover the amount by intimidating her, the police said.
They enlisted three other youths for the purpose, police said.
Baloni said Verma was returning home to Kanan Kunj on her scooter after dropping her daughter at the college bus stop when a black car suddenly stopped in front of her at Nala Pani Chowk.
The men inside the car allegedly attempted to pull her into the vehicle, following which Verma raised an alarm. People gathered at the spot, forcing the accused to flee, the official said.
A video of the incident also circulated on social media.
Based on Verma’s complaint, police registered a case and examined CCTV footage from the spot and surrounding routes, Baloni said.
Following sustained efforts, police traced Chahat and arrested her, the official said.
During interrogation, Chahat allegedly revealed the names of four other accomplices — Deepak Paswan, Sushant alias Lucky, Aditya Vashishth and Priyanshu.
Police teams are conducting raids at various locations to apprehend the four accused, Baloni said. PTI DPT NB
