Mumbai, Aug 28 (PTI) The Mumbai Police have arrested two persons from Rajasthan for allegedly duping suppliers here of Rs 17.65 lakh under the pretext of procuring chemicals from them, officials said on Friday.
The accused, identified as Lalitkumar Bhagwanram Bishnoi (36) and his accomplice Vikas Bishnoi (19), were apprehended after an interstate operation by a specialised police team, they said.
The duo operated a sophisticated digital and financial scam targeting chemical merchants. They allegedly created fraudulent corporate identities to pose as legitimate business entities interested in placing bulk orders for expensive chemicals.
Instead of transferring real funds, the suspects generated and displayed deceptive, high-quality digital screenshots of fake online transactions using platforms like PhonePe to convince suppliers that payments had been successfully processed.
Believing the digital transfers were authentic, the suppliers dispatched the consignments, which the accused then cleared without actually making any payment, police said.
The racket came to light after an affected merchant noticed the financial discrepancy and lodged a complaint with the Mumbai Police.
Acting on the complaint, the MHB Colony Police tracked the digital footprints and location coordinates of the suspects, trailing them to Rajasthan, where a police team conducted a raid and took both individuals into custody, officials added.
Further investigation is underway to identify potential co-conspirators and uncover the wider network involved in the scam, an official added. PTI ZA NP
