Banda (UP), Aug 21 (PTI) Two farmers died after allegedly inhaling toxic gas while descending into a borewell to repair a faulty pump in Ajitpara village, in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district, on Friday afternoon, a police official said.

Circle Officer Krishna Kumar Tripathi said that at around 12.45 pm on Friday, Lalu (40) descended into a borewell belonging to Shivnarayan Singh in Ajitpara village to repair the water pump but lost consciousness after inhaling toxic gas.

Subsequently, the farm owner, Krishna Kumar (45), who went down to rescue him, also lost consciousness.

Tripathi said that upon receiving information about the incident, the police arrived at the scene, lowered another farmer, equipped with oxygen, into the well to retrieve the unconscious farmers from the borehole, and rushed them to the hospital.

Doctors declared Lalu dead after examination. Later, the farm owner, Krishna Kumar, passed away while undergoing treatment at the medical college, the CO said.

The bodies of both farmers have been sent for post-mortem examinations, and an investigation into the incident has been initiated. PTI COR NAV MPL MPL

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
