New Delhi: Two people died after a car allegedly hit them from behind on Nrupatunga Road in Bengaluru on Monday afternoon. According to reports, the SUV belonged to a relative of BJP MLA Haratalu Halappa.
Police said the deceased were identified as Majeed Khan (36), an automobile spare parts dealer, and Ayyappa (60), a parking lot manager.
Halappa is an MLA from Shivamogga’s Sagara constituency. He is the chairman of Mysore Sales International Limited (MSIL). The four injured men, Riyaz Pasha, Mohammed Riyaz, Mohammed Saleem, and Sher Gilani, are under medical treatment at St Martha’s Hospital.
The accused, identified as Mohan (48), has been detained by police and reportedly said that he had accidentally pushed the accelerator instead of the brake and hit multiple vehicles.
According to reports, the car does not belong to Halappa, but the MLA’s pass was embossed on it. The pass was later allegedly removed by the MLA’s supporters.
The Halasur traffic police have filed a report and taken Mohan into custody for further probe. According to the preliminary investigation, Mohan was driving recklessly but was not under the influence of alcohol.
“The vehicle is registered in the name of Ramu Suresh, a retired forest department employee,” Halasuru traffic police station told The Indian Express. Reports stated that Suresh’s son married Halappa’s daughter. Mohan was on his way to pick up Halappa’s daughter.
According to the police, the car drove over Khan’s head after he fell as a result of the accident’s impact. Khan and Ayyappa were declared dead at the hospital, a police officer said.
The police seized the Toyota Innova and other vehicles damaged in the accident. They added that additional investigations were underway.
