Bahraich (UP), Sep 25 (PTI) Two brothers allegedly involved in snatching a woman’s ‘mangalsutra’ were arrested following an encounter with police here, officials said on Friday.
The encounter took place on Thursday evening. The accused were identified as Salman and Arif alias Taslim, both involved in multiple robbery and theft cases, the police officials said.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Vishwajeet Srivastava said around noon on September 21, two motorcycle-borne men allegedly snatched the ‘mangalsutra’ of a woman travelling in an e-rickshaw in the Fakharpur police station area.
“Three teams were formed to investigate the incident. Police identified the suspects with the help of footage from a traffic interceptor vehicle’s camera, the ‘Yaksh’ app, other technical resources and informers,” the SP said.
“Acting on a tip-off on Thursday, the SWAT team and Fakharpur police laid a trap near Gandhi Ghat. When police tried to stop the motorcycle carrying the two suspects, one of them allegedly opened fire.
“In retaliatory firing, Salman sustained a bullet injury to his right leg and was taken to the Fakharpur community health centre. His brother Arif alias Taslim was arrested,” police said.
A 12-bore country-made pistol, one spent cartridge, a live cartridge, a stolen Apache motorcycle and the stolen ‘mangalsutra’ were recovered from the possession of the accused.
According to police, Salman and Arif hail from Gonda and lived in a rented house in Bahraich. They have eight to nine cases of robbery and theft registered against them in Bahraich and Gonda. PTI COR KIS DIV
