Agartala, Nov 3 (PTI): Tripura Assembly Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury on Tuesday called for a change of government in the country and the state, alleging that people’s fundamental and democratic rights had been taken away over the past 12 years.
Addressing a party programme at Rabindra Bhavan, the CPI(M) state secretary alleged that opposition candidates were being prevented from filing their nomination papers for the upcoming civic elections in the state.
A bulldozer had been parked in front of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s (SDM) office at Mohanpur in West Tripura to prevent opposition candidates from submitting their nomination papers, he claimed.
“If they are so popular, why have they parked a bulldozer in front of the Returning Officer’s (SDM) office at Mohanpur? They have piled up bricks in front of the SDM’s office at Jirania in the presence of security personnel to prevent opposition nominees from filing their nominations,” Chaudhury said in an indirect attack on the BJP.
Elections to 21 civic bodies in the state are scheduled to be held on November 27, with the nomination process currently underway.
“What has been happening in our country for the past 12 years and in Tripura for the past nine years cannot be tolerated any longer. I appeal to the youth and students to come forward and challenge the ‘minority force’ ruling the country and the state,” he said.
Chaudhury alleged that those who raised their voices against the ruling establishment were branded anti-national, but asserted that people must continue to speak out to restore democracy and democratic values.
“Why should we not call for a regime change against those who have taken away our fundamental rights, the Constitution and other rights? We must change the regime. If we do not raise our voices, the minority force will continue to rule the majority of the people,” he said. PTI PS MNB
