Tripura goes to polls on 16 February, Meghalaya & Nagaland to vote on 27 February

The results for the three states will be declared on 2 March, the Election Commission of India announced Wednesday

New Delhi: Assembly elections in Tripura will be held on 16 February, while Nagaland and Meghalaya will go to polls on 27 February. The results for the three states will be declared 2 March, the Election Commission of India announced Wednesday.

While announcing the dates, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said that over 1.76 lakh first-time voters would participate in the assembly elections in the three NE states.

“There are more than 62.8 lakh electors combined in Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura including — 31.47 lakh female electors, 97,000 80+ voters, and 31,700 PwD voters,” Kumar added.

The five-year term of three assemblies in the Northeastern states of Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland will end on March 12, 15 and 22, respectively

The legislative assemblies of the three states have a strength of 60 members each.

With this announcement, Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland will be one of the first states to have assembly elections this year.

While Tripura has a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government; in Nagaland, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) is in power. National People’s Party (NPP), the only party from the Northeast to have a national party recognition, runs the government in Meghalaya.
