Tribal council poll results not worrisome for BJP: Tripura CM

Agartala, Apr 23 (PTI) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday asserted that the result of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) was “not worrisome” for the BJP as the party managed to double its polled votes.

The Tipra Motha Party (TMP) registered a massive win in the recent tribal council elections by bagging 24 out of 28 seats, while the BJP secured four seats.

The TMP increased its vote share from 37.43 per cent in 2021 to 54.95 per cent in 2026, and the saffron party also enhanced its vote share from 18.72 per cent in 2021 to 28.95 per cent in 2026.

“The tribal council election results are not worrisome for the BJP, which contested the polls without any alliance. This is the first time in the northeastern state that a national party contested the tribal council polls without depending on any regional party,” he said at a press conference.

Saha said the party, which had polled 1 lakh votes in the 2021 election, bagged 2.18 lakh this time.

“We are not frustrated with the poll defeat as we made attempts to win the hearts of the people living in the tribal council area. How long will we continue to rely on regional parties? We may not have been fully able to win electors’ confidence, but we managed to penetrate every village in the tribal council area with saffron flags,” he said.

The CPI(M), which had ruled the tribal council for several years, used to depend on its tribal wing — Gana Mukti Parishad — and the Congress led the tribal council in alliance with a regional party, Tripura Upajati Yuba Samity (TUJS).

Responding to the Opposition’s strong objection over the sanction of Rs 64.50 lakh for victims of post-poll violence, Saha said the amount was released from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

“The amount is meagre given the extensive damage caused due to post-poll violence in several parts of the state. The violence was pre-planned and unleashed to terrorise voters so that they don’t dare to vote for a national party next time,” he said. PTI PS ACD
