Bengaluru, May 12 (PTI) A tribal body has requested Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to exert pressure on the Centre and the state government to make provision for their long-pending demand of 56 per cent reservation for SC, ST and the OBC in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, ‘Karnataka Rajya Valmiki Samajada Samana Manaskara Vedike’ also appealed to vacate the stay on 56 per cent reservation law.

“We also request all MPs, MLAs and ministers of our State to exert pressure on both the State and Central Governments and fight for inclusion of the 56 per cent reservation law in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution,” the tribal body, led by its president and former Congress MP V S Ugrappa said.

The letter was shared by the Chief Minister’s Office on Tuesday.

“Recently, the Karnataka High Court granted a stay on the 56 per cent reservation law, resulting in a major setback to social justice for SCs, STs and other backward classes,” he said.

The ‘Vedike’ said that following its demands, during the Belagavi session held in December 2025, the state government passed a unanimous resolution urging inclusion of this law in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution.

However, despite several months passing, the state government has not exerted sufficient pressure to ensure inclusion of the law in the Ninth Schedule. No effective pressure has been brought upon the central government either, Ugrappa led organisation alleged.

The letter alleged that on January 20, this year, the secretary of the Tribal Welfare Department wrote to the secretary of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes seeking guidance on this matter.

“This appears to be merely a symbolic exercise,” the organisation said.

It also accused the Centre of “delaying the inclusion” of 56 per cent reservation law in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution.

The tribal body also complained that many people in the State have allegedly obtained false SC and ST caste certificates and are usurping the benefits meant for these communities.

The outfit has requested Siddaramaiah to convene an all-party meeting on this issue, lead an all-party delegation to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, appoint competent lawyers in the High Court and file applications for vacating the stay order.

It also appealed to the Chief Minister to convene an urgent meeting of elected representatives and leaders belonging to SC, ST and other backward classes to discuss this issue. PTI GMS GMS ROH
