TN Minister releases water from Grand Anaicut for irrigation in Cauvery delta

Thanjavur (TN), Jun 16 (PTI) Tamil Nadu Municipal Administration, Urban and Water Supply Minister K N Nehru on Friday released water from Grand Anaicut to Vennar and Kollidam rivers for irrigation purpose in the Cauvery delta region. After the water was released from the dam in the morning, Nehru told reporters that over 3.42 lakh farmland in the Cauvery delta region would be benefited during the kuruvai (short-term) paddy season covering the districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore.

He also said 500 cusecs of water was released into Cauvery, Vennar and Kollidam rivers while 100 cusecs was let out into Grand Anaicut Canal with the outflow expected to be increased gradually over the next few days. The turn system would be implemented when the water will reach tail-end areas depending upon the water level, he said. The minister also said sufficient fertilisers, pesticides and other agriculture equipment are available in the agriculture depots in the Cauvery delta districts and made an appeal to farmers from the region to make judicious use of the released water.

MPs from Thanjavur and Mayiladuthurai, along with MLAs and district collectors of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai and Mayiladuthurai participated.

A few days ago, Chief Minister M K Stalin had released water from the Stanley reservoir in Mettur, which is upstream of the Cauvery river in Salem district, for irrigation purpose in the delta districts. PTI COR HDA
