Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), Sep 29 (PTI) Tamil Nadu Minister Aadhav Arjuna on Tuesday accused the DMK and AIADMK of waging a “coordinated negative campaign” against Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.
He alleged that the two major Dravidian parties had resorted to personal attacks during the campaign for the Madurantakam and Dharapuram bypolls, targeting Vijay, and suggested that they appeared to have a “tacit understanding”.
The state Public Works and Sports Development minister claimed that Vijay’s campaign for the October 6 bypolls had gained significant traction, setting the stage for a strong showing by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
Speaking to reporters here, the minister alleged that the DMK had focused not on ideological issues but on slander, obscene remarks and personal attacks, including against women.
He claimed that the use of abusive language and attacks on the personal lives of political opponents had been a hallmark of the party’s leadership, from former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to his grandson and LoP Udhayanidhi Stalin.
Training his guns on the AIADMK, Arjuna alleged that the party had drifted from the principles of its late Chief Ministers M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa and was now being controlled by the family of its general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, sidelining loyal party workers in the process.
Arjuna alleged that the DMK and the AIADMK under Palaniswami had effectively formed an “unholy alliance”, using similar negative tactics to serve their interests and sideline political opponents.
On Udhayanidhi Stalin, Arjuna alleged that the DMK leader resorted to abusive remarks and personal attacks instead of ideological campaigning.
He also criticised DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth for aligning with the DMK, alleging that she had “compromised the core political stance of her party”.
“The soul of the late actor-politician Vijayakanth will not forgive Premalatha for aligning with a party that he had previously rejected,” Arjuna said. PTI JSP SSK
