Chennai, Aug 19 (PTI) In a major push to boost safety, sustainability, and connectivity across tourist hotspots, the Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday announced a series of key initiatives, including providing security especially for women travellers.
During the demand for grants for his department, Tourism Minister S Rajesh Kumar told the Assembly that the comprehensive plan includes installing AI-powered surveillance cameras, setting up dedicated tourist security organisations, launching feasibility studies for ropeways in hill stations, and converting government-operated motorboats into eco-friendly electric boats.
“Our primary focus is to position Tamil Nadu as a top-tier, eco-friendly, and secure destination for global and domestic travelers”, he added.
Stating that to enhance safety at major tourist destinations with a specific focus on women travelers, Artificial Intelligence (AI) surveillance cameras will be installed across major high-footfall sites, he said. Dedicated tourist security organisations will be established in five key regions to bolster safety infrastructure in Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur, Poompuhar and Hogenakkal.
“Action is underway to conduct feasibility studies for ropeway systems to improve connectivity and relieve traffic congestion”, he said, adding, feasibility report is underway for a rope car route connecting Kumbakarai Falls, Vellagavi, Vattakanal, and the Kodaikanal bus stand.
Rajesh Kumar said that in an effort to preserve ecological balance and protect natural water resources, all motorboats operated by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) across various boat houses will be converted into electric boats.
