Chennai, Oct 18 (PTI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Sunday reviewed rain-related damage, relief efforts and flood-prevention measures at the Integrated State Command and Control Centre in the GCC’s Ripon Building, in view of the ongoing northeast monsoon.

Heavy rain on Saturday night inundated several parts of Chennai and disrupted traffic, with North Chennai recording 6 cm to 10 cm of rainfall in less than an hour.

According to official data, Parrys Corner recorded the highest rainfall in the city at 36 cm, followed by Kathivakkam at 34 cm, and Manali and Ennore at 21 cm. Waterlogging was reported at 35 locations.

The showers were triggered by an upper-air cyclonic circulation over north Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh, along with a trough extending from Lakshadweep to the southwest Bay of Bengal.

Accompanied by cabinet ministers and senior officials, Vijay monitored rainfall data, the status of subways, canals and river mouths, and the redressal of public grievances, an official release said.

At a review meeting, GCC Commissioner G S Sameeran briefed the chief minister on the emergency response, including rescue operations and food distribution.

Vijay appreciated the prompt response of corporation personnel and allied departments, interacted with staff at the control centre and applauded their work.

He instructed officials to inspect areas that had experienced waterlogging in the past and step up preventive works to avoid a recurrence, official sources said.

He directed ministers and officials to expedite precautionary measures to protect Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu from heavy rain and flooding, and outlined the response protocols to be followed during flood situations.

The CM asked all departments to maintain strict coordination and execute relief measures diligently in anticipation of further heavy rain warnings, the release added.

Meteorologists have forecast widespread rainfall across several districts. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for 17 districts, including Chennai and Tiruvallur, until October 23, warning of heavy rainfall ranging from 6 cm to 11 cm. PTI SNR SSK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
