Haridwar, Jun 29 (PTI) Three persons were killed and four others injured when a state transport bus collided head-on with a pickup truck in this district in the early hours of Monday, police said.

The accident occurred on the Shyampur flyover under the Shyampur police station limits at around 4.30 am, causing traffic disruption, they said.

Initial probe suggests that the bus driver may have dozed off at the wheel, leading to the crash, the police said.

According to Superintendent of Police (City) Abhay Pratap Singh, a roadways bus was heading towards Haridwar from Najibabad when it collided with a pickup truck travelling from Haridwar to Bijnor.

The impact of the collision was so severe that two occupants of the pickup vehicle were thrown off the flyover.

The pickup truck was carrying around 10 people. It was immediately not known how many passengers were travelling in the bus.

The injured have been admitted to the district hospital.

Upon receiving the information, a police team reached the spot and launched a rescue operation. The victims were taken to the district hospital.

Two of the victims, identified as Ahaan (18), a resident of Badapur in Najibabad, and an unidentified 35-year-old man, succumbed during treatment. Two other critically injured passengers, Sharafat (42) and his wife Shabana (35), were referred to AIIMS Rishikesh when Shabana died enroute, taking the toll to three, Singh said.

The other injured persons were identified as Annu (18), Soni Lal (25) of Hardoi, and Shamim (42) from Bijnor.

The families of the victims have been informed and the bodies sent for postmortem examination, the SP said.

Both damaged vehicles were removed from the highway using a hydra crane to restore the normal flow of traffic, he said, adding an investigation is underway to ascertain the exact reason behind the accident. PTI COR AKY AKY KVK KVK
