First observed in 1953, Hindi Diwas marks the day in 1949 when the Constituent Assembly recognised Hindi as an official language of India.

The decision to confer the status of official language on Hindi was taken under the Munshi-Ayyangar formula, after nearly three years of debate in the Constituent Assembly on the subject.

Hindi is a protected language in South Africa, the third official court language in the UAE, and a dialect of it is the official language in Fiji.
