Thane, Jul 11 (PTI) The 31st ‘Thane Varsha Marathon’, an annual sporting event popular among local citizens, will be held here on August 10 after a gap of six years, a top official has said.

The marathon, organised by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) in association with the Thane District Athletics Association, was last held in 2019.

“This marathon holds a special place for Thane and its people. Since it is being conducted after six years, all municipal departments must work in close coordination to make it a grand success,” Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao said on Thursday, during a meeting of the civic body’s sports department.

“There have been several changes in the city’s structures and traffic conditions over the past few years. So all the routes from where the marathon will pass must be re-evaluated and planned accordingly to ensure its conduct,” he directed the officials.

The total prize money, including trophies and medals, is Rs 10,38,900, he said.

“The first winner in each group will receive Rs 1 lakh as the top prize. Prizes and trophies will be awarded to the first 10 winners in each group,” he added.

The marathon will feature 12 categories across state and district levels.

The State-level categories are: Open Group (men and women) 21 km; Over 18 years (men and women) 10 km; Under 18 Years (boys and girls) 10 km.

The District-level categories are: Under 15 years (boys and girls) 5 km; Under 12 years (boys and girls) 3 km; Senior Citizens (men and women) 500 metres.

In addition, a Corporate Group category for former public representatives and municipal officials will see a 1-km race specially organised for them. PTI COR NP
