Kolkata, Aug 3 (PTI) A Thai national, who allegedly overstayed in India for more than five years after the expiry of her visa, was detained during a raid at a spa in south Kolkata, a police officer said on Monday.
Acting on specific intelligence, a police team raided spa on Sarat Bose Road late Sunday and intercepted the woman, who claimed to be a resident of Samutprakhan, Bangkok, he said.
During questioning, she was unable to produce any valid documents authorising her stay in India, he said, adding that she was subsequently taken to the police station with the assistance of women police personnel for further examination.
“The woman produced her Thai passport during verification. However, her passport had expired on February 23, 2025, while her Indian tourist visa, issued in February 2020, had expired on February 27, 2021. Preliminary inquiry revealed that she had been staying in India without valid travel or immigration documents,” the officer said.
“She is being produced before the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Kolkata, for necessary legal action under the provisions governing foreign nationals. Pending her production, she has been kept in safe custody at Tollygunge Women’s Police Station under CCTV surveillance,” the officer said. PTI SCH RG
