Baghpat, Jun 9 (PTI) A tent trader and his son were allegedly shot dead in broad daylight in Baraut town here on Tuesday, with police suspecting an old rivalry behind the incident.

Superintendent of Police Suraj Rai said a team received information around 6 pm that a person had opened fire at the father-son duo while they were sitting at their shop in the Baraut police station area.

The victims were rushed to a community health centre and later referred to the district hospital, where doctors declared them dead, he said.

The deceased were identified as tent trader Sohan Lal (55) and his son Vikas (30).

“Prima facie, the incident appears to be linked to an old dispute. Information has surfaced about a previous dispute between the accused and the deceased family. A case registered in 2016 has also come to light and the incident is suspected to be a result of that rivalry,” Rai said.

The accused has been identified as Varun Lohari, an alleged gangster.

Police are registering an FIR on the complaint of the family, and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, he added.

The SP said 10 teams have been formed to crack the case and arrest the accused. Police are examining CCTV footage and collecting other evidence.

Regarding reports about Lohari allegedly being injured in the firing, Rai said all aspects were being investigated and details would be shared after verification.

Following the incident, heavy police deployment was made in the area as tension prevailed. Local traders also shut the market and staged a protest. PTI COR KIS APL APL
