Thane, Jun 6 (PTI) A federation of temples in Maharashtra on Saturday welcomed the state government’s decision to postpone the proposed ‘Maharashtra Devasthan Inam Abolition Draft Act 2026’, terming it a major victory for temple trustees and Hindu organisations.
State Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Friday made an announcement about putting the draft law on hold in Nagpur.
In a release, Sunil Ghanwat, national organiser of the Maharashtra Mandir Mahasangh, said, “We wholeheartedly welcome this pro-temple decision. Restoring the inam lands back to the temples, removing encroachments on the lines of the Waqf Board, and making it mandatory to allocate plots of ‘equal value’ to temples regarding centuries-old possessions are welcome steps.” The organisation requested the government that funds from large shrines be diverted to restore smaller and neglected temples.
