Hyderabad, Apr 23 (PTI) The Telangana Tourism Department, in what it described as a unique initiative, is enabling Adivasis from remote areas to visit key attractions in Hyderabad, offering them exposure to modern urban life.
Under the ‘Adivasi Tourism Exposure Programme’ launched by Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao, a group of 250 Adivasis from Utnoor mandal in Adilabad district visited several attractions, including the Taramati Baradari cultural complex, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Charminar, and Nehru Zoological Park, on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Adivasis arrived in Hyderabad in five air-conditioned buses, which were flagged off at Gondu Gudem in Adilabad district on Wednesday morning by the minister.
Krishna Rao said the programme was designed to provide Adivasis with new perspectives, introduce them to urban lifestyles, and boost their self-confidence.
He said the initiative was launched to fulfil a promise he made in December last year.
Recalling his visit to Kummari Kunta village in Adilabad district, he said he was surprised to learn that only four out of a group of 1,800 people had ever visited Hyderabad.
As part of this initiative, the visitors were selected through the government’s Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), official sources said.
The Adivasis were given a traditional welcome by tourism officials during their visit to Charminar on Thursday.
The visitors said they had long wished to see Charminar, and their wish had now been fulfilled.
More groups of Adivasis are expected to visit Hyderabad in the coming days, official sources added. PTI SJR SSK
