Hyderabad, Apr 30 (PTI) A fire damaged the fully grown maize crop of six farmers in a village in Mahabubabad district of Telangana, which they suspect may have been caused by power lines near a transformer in the field.
The agriculture department, however, assured them of assistance on Thursday.
The farmers, in a complaint lodged with the police, stated that their maize crop over about 15 acres was damaged in a fire on April 26.
The complainants said the fire may have been triggered by loose wires coming into contact due to strong winds at a transformer.
Fire personnel who visited the fields on April 26 could not ascertain the exact cause of the fire. A police official said a report on the cause had been sought from them.
When asked whether sabotage could be involved, he said no evidence has been found so far to indicate foul play.
He said a case of a fire accident had been registered based on the complaint.
An agriculture department official said a report would be submitted to the government recommending compensation for the affected farmers.
Electricity department officials could not be reached for comment. PTI GDK SJR SSK
