Hyderabad, Oct 10 (PTI) Cautioning that a major crisis is looming due to El Niño, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday asked officials to prepare an action plan to address drinking water, irrigation, agriculture and electricity needs till June next year.

Reddy, who held a meeting with officials on the El Niño situation, said the action plan should be prepared like how plans were prepared to deal with the COVID-19 crisis, he said.

The electricity demand is expected to rise further. The government is ready to spend any amount to purchase power if it is not available in the market, he said.

Favouring judicious use of electricity, he said steps should be taken to temporarily postpone works based on it, according to an official release.

He said programmes to raise people’s awareness on the impact of El Niño should be conducted using cinema, media and others.

Emphasising measures to ensure that problems in water supply do not deepen, he said not even a single drop can be wasted.

An official release on October 9 said the Chief Minister would hold a meeting with ministers on October 12 to address the state’s growing agricultural and supply crises caused by El Niño-driven deficit rainfall.

Owing to El Niño, the state has recorded 17 per cent below-normal rainfall this monsoon season, leaving roughly 235 mandals facing drought-like conditions, it said. PTI SJR SJR ADB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
