New Delhi: A 20-year-old man, accused in the murder of a teenage girl in Delhi’s Rohini, was arrested from Bulandshahr on Monday.

Sahil is charged with repeatedly stabbing the 16-year-old in a busy lane in the dense Shahbad Dairy area – a brutal act witnessed by passersby, who apparently did not intervene.

A fridge and air-conditioner repairman, Sahil allegedly attacked the girl – reportedly his girlfriend – after a fight. She was on her way to attend her friend’s son’s birthday party at that time.

Sahil absconded soon after the murder, prompting a massive manhunt by the Delhi police, which formed six teams to nab him. A first information report (FIR) was also registered for murder.

The brutal murder was caught in a closed-circuit television camera, NDTV reported. The disturbing video shows him stabbing her repeatedly, and coming back to hit her again with a rock.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer North) Raja Banthia said the girl was brought dead to hospital with several injuries on her body. “She was stabbed more than 20 times… A post-mortem is being conducted.”

He added that Sahil’s parents were cooperating with the investigation.

Delhi Commission for Women Swati Maliwal said several people witnessed the attack but did nothing. “Delhi has become extremely unsafe for women and girls. I appeal to the central government to call a high-level meeting with the Union home minister and the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi,” Maliwal said.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) also requested the Delhi Police to conduct a time-bound investigation. NCW chief Rekha Sharma has formed a three-member team – headed by member Delina Khongdup – to look into the matter. The team will soon visit the family of the victim, she said.
