Gorakhpur (UP), Jun 17 (PTI) A 13-year-old girl, who had come to visit her uncle’s family in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district, was killed after a bullet allegedly fired from a licensed pistol struck her in the head under mysterious circumstances, police said on Wednesday.

The victim, identified as Gopi Barnwal, a resident of Sadat in Ghazipur district, had arrived at the residence of her uncle, Sushil Barnwal, on Mohan Road two days ago.

According to police, the incident occurred between 10 pm and 11 pm on Tuesday when a gunshot suddenly rang out from a room inside the house.

Family members rushed to the room after hearing the sound and found the teenager lying in a pool of blood. She had suffered a gunshot wound to the head and died on the spot.

Police personnel from Kotwali police station reached the scene and sent the body for post-mortem examination.

During the investigation, officers seized Sushil Barnwal’s licensed pistol, which is suspected to have fired the fatal shot.

Investigators are yet to determine whether the weapon discharged accidentally, was being handled negligently, or if there was any other circumstance behind the incident.

Police said all angles are being probed and no possibility can be ruled out at this stage. The post-mortem report, forensic evidence and statements of family members are expected to help establish the exact sequence of events.

Kotwali SHO Rakesh Kumar Rai said a detailed investigation is underway. PTI COR ABN NB
