Kochi, Apr 15 (PTI) A 17-year-old girl has drowned in an abandoned quarry here, police said on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Hadhiya Hanan, daughter of Nishad M M, a resident of Idavoor in Perumbavoor.
According to police, the incident occurred around 5.15 pm on Tuesday when Hanan, along with her cousins, reached the quarry at Cheruvattoor near Iramalloor in Kothamangalam to play.
While playing, she accidentally fell into a pond formed by quarrying activities.
Residents, along with Fire and Rescue Services personnel, launched a search operation soon after.
After an hour-long search, she was pulled out of the water and rushed to a hospital, where she died while undergoing treatment, police said.
Kothamangalam police have registered a case and started an investigation.
