Kolkata, Sep 29 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday accused the Congress of “double standards” over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, alleging that the party welcomes the exercise when it suits its political interests and questions the SIR when it does not.
The post came a day before a meeting of opposition parties in Delhi on Wednesday against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Former CM Mamata Banerjee has reached Delhi for the meeting.
“The double standards of the Congress party and its opportunistic alliance partners stand completely exposed once again,” Adhikari said in a post on X.
“When it comes to Constitutional bodies and established electoral procedures like the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the Congress follows a singular, shameless doctrine: Heads I win, tails the system is rigged,” he said.
The chief minister claimed that in Kerala, where the Congress-led front took on the Left to capture power, its leaders had praised the SIR process, credited the clean-up of rolls with levelling the playing field and hailed institutional vigilance when it helped them oust the Left.
“When the process helps them win, it is celebrated as a ‘triumph of grassroots democracy’,” he said.
Adhikari alleged that the script changed in states where the Congress and its allies faced “inevitable defeat”, with the same exercise being described as “manipulated” and “flawed”.
“This is nothing but the petty politics of convenience. You cannot selectively trust institutions only when the results suit your political fortunes,” Adhikari said.
Asserting that the people of West Bengal and the rest of the country “see right through this facade”, he said a political entity that lacked the courage to accept people’s rejection could not hide behind frivolous attacks on routine democratic procedures.
“Hypocrisy has a limit, but for the Congress and its allies, duplicity remains their only permanent policy,” he said.
Responding to the post, TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh, who belongs to the Mamata Banerjee faction of the party, said such comments coming from Adhikari were born out of fear and panic over the opposition coming together against the BJP. PTI BSM NN
