Thrissur (Kerala), Apr 23 (PTI) Union Minister Suresh Gopi on Thursday announced that financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh each will be provided to the families of those who lost their lives in the Mundathicode fireworks unit explosion in Thrissur.

As many as 14 people were killed and four remain missing after an explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit linked to Thrissur Pooram celebrations on April 21.

The financial assistance will be provided through a trust set up in memory of the Union Minister’s daughter.

In a Facebook post, Gopi said “the tragedy has caused deep anguish” in Thrissur, where the Pooram festival and its traditions are “integral to the region’s cultural identity.” The assistance will be provided through the Lakshmi Suresh Gopi Initiative Trust as a gesture of support to the bereaved families, he said.

“Though no compensation can replace the lives lost, we hope this support will offer some relief to the affected families,” he added. PTI TBA SSK
