Dharamshala, Jun 24 (PTI) The State Election Commission on Wednesday organised a one-day thematic workshop on ‘Ease of Identification at the Ballot’ in Dharamshala to discuss ways to make voter identification simpler, more inclusive, and technology-driven.
Addressing the gathering, Nandita Gupta, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Himachal Pradesh, said that ensuring easy and accessible participation of every eligible voter is vital for strengthening democracy.
She said the workshop would help generate valuable suggestions and innovations for improving future electoral processes.
The workshop began with the presentation of a thematic report on voter identification by the state training nodal officer. Three technical sessions were held during the day. The first focused on legal provisions and law-and-order issues related to voter identification, with experts including former CEO Narendra Chauhan, DC Rana, and researcher Rishabh Dhanshu sharing their views.
The second session discussed voter awareness initiatives and measures to simplify voter identification before polling day. Speakers included Prof Sunny Atwal, Ankita Dhawan, and State SVEEP Icons Shalini Sharma and Jaspreet.
The third session examined challenges in ensuring electoral inclusion of women, transgender persons, migrants, and tribal communities.
Kumar Sambhav Pandey of IIT Mandi and Arun Sharma of Himachal Pradesh University presented suggestions for making the electoral process more inclusive.
Afternoon sessions focused on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies in voter identification, administrative challenges, and international best practices.
Experts from IIT Mandi, IIT Delhi, the Himachal Pradesh Department of Digital Technology and Governance, Dharamshala Municipal Corporation, as well as election specialists from Albania and Bangladesh, shared their insights.
