Mumbai, May 14 (PTI) A staircase in a four-storey residential-cum-commercial building collapsed in Grant Road area here on Thursday afternoon, leaving 63 persons stranded before they were rescued, a fire department official said.

The incident took place at Yusuf Building in Kharjeetji Rana Lane in Grant Road (East).

The staircase between the ground and first floors collapsed while a part of it was left hanging precariously, said the official.

The ground floor of the building has commercial offices and shops while the upper floors have residential units. Residents on the second floor were left stranded as teams of the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police and 108 ambulance service reached the spot.

Fire brigade personnel rescued all 63 people — 46 men, 12 women and five children — safely.

Some dangerously hanging portions of the structure were pulled down while the area around the building was cordoned off, the official said. PTI ZA KRK
