Panaji, Aug 3 (PTI) Reservation for Scheduled Tribes in Goa assembly will be resolved “as soon as possible”, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Monday.
His statement comes ahead of a proposed mega protest on the issue on August 13 here by United Tribals Association Alliance (UTAA). The association has been holding state-wide meetings to garner support for the march.
“The issue of political reservation for STs in the Goa Legislative Assembly will be resolved as soon as possible. I have already requested the Centre to take up the issue as early as possible. I am trying my level best to get it resolved soon,” Sawant told reporters.
He was speaking here after holding a meeting with state Art and Culture Minister and Tribal leader Ramesh Tawadkar on the issue.
“It will be settled within next 15 days or a month. I am following up with my party (BJP) high leadership and also the Central government,” Tawadkar told reporters.
Asserting there is no need for new population census to announce reservation, he said necessary formalities can be completed within two months after the notification is released.
“We can reserve seats based on the available census,” Tawadkar claimed.
Goa is expected to reserve four out of its 40 assembly seats for ST candidates. Assembly polls are set to be held in the state next year. PTI RPS BNM
