Thane, Jul 19 (PTI) The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and local police seized a stock of spurious and counterfeit butter and arrested three persons following a raid at a godown in Maharashtra’s Thane district, an official said on Saturday.
Acting on a tip-off, the FDA and police conducted a joint raid at a godown in the Kasimpura area of Bhiwandi on Friday, senior inspector Vinayak Gaikwad of Shantinagar police station said.
During the raid, the team found that the accused were producing adulterated butter, packaging it under the label of a well-known commercial brand, and preparing it for distribution, he said.
The accused, Jishan Mustaq Ansari, Mohammad Musaddir Mohammad Akram Shaikh, and S. Sanjay, were arrested, and the entire stock of counterfeit butter and other items worth Rs 1.13 lakh was seized, the official said.
The godown used for manufacturing and storage was sealed on the spot, he said.
An FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, and sections 318 (cheating), 274 (adulteration of food or drink intended for sale), 275 (sale of noxious food or drink) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
“We are probing the extent of the network and distribution chain. Further investigation is ongoing to determine how widespread the circulation of this adulterated butter was,” the official said. PTI COR ARU
