Kota (Raj), Oct 17 (PTI) Lok Sabha Speaker and Kota-Bundi MP Om Birla expressed deep grief over a road accident that left eight people dead and 15 injured on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway on Saturday morning. Birla also visited the injured passengers at the New Medical College Hospital (NMCH).

The accident occurred when a mini-bus carrying 23 passengers veered off the road and plunged into a 15-foot-deep drain along the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan’s Kota district at around 6 am on Saturday.

The accident occurred near pole number 384 on the Expressway. Authorities suspect the driver fell asleep at the wheel or felt drowsy, causing the vehicle to veer off the eight-lane road.

Birla interacted with the injured at the NMCH and directed the local administration and hospital management to ensure comprehensive medical care.

Extending condolences to the bereaved families, he also prayed for the swift recovery of the injured.

While interacting with media after the visit, Birla described the accident as “extremely tragic and painful”, adding that a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the crash.

Road safety teams are continuously studying the Delhi-Mumbai Highway and other routes, with a final review meeting scheduled for November to address the remaining concerns, he added.

While the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had previously identified several black spots on highways like the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, the local administration, transport department, and police would now work together to identify and rectify all accident-prone spots to prevent future accidents, he further said. Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
