Agartala, Oct 17 (PTI) Six surrendered militants of NLFT and ATTF were arrested for blocking a national highway in West Tripura district on Saturday morning, a police officer said.

Around 16 surrendered militants under the leadership of Kaklaijoy Tripura gathered at Hataikator and blocked the national highway, demanding proper rehabilitation.

“Executive Magistrate Arajit Debbarma, who was deputed, requested the surrendered militants to remove the blockade on the national highway as the state is in the midst of a festival. However, they did not pay heed,” police spokesperson Rajdeep Deb said.

He said the executive magistrate then announced the blockade as an illegal gathering and ordered the security forces to clear the national highway as vehicles carrying essentials were stuck on both sides.

“When security forces tried to disperse the surrendered militants, they became angry and used criminal force to restrict the cops from enforcing the magistrate’s order, leading to a scuffle. The national highway was cleared. Two police personnel were injured in the incident,” he said.

A suo motu case was lodged against six surrendered militants for blocking that national highway and applying criminal force to restrict the security personnel from enforcing the magistrate’s order.

“All six surrendered militants were arrested and produced before a local court, which sent them to judicial remand till October 31,” he said. PTI PS RG

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
