Gangtok, Jul 4 (PTI) To promote safe street food culture and empower local entrepreneurship, Sikkim Urban Development Minister Arun Kumar Upreti on Friday inaugurated the state’s first safe and hygienic street food hub ‘Khau Galli’ here, officials said.

The food lane at Nam Nang, Deorali, features 20 food stalls operated by various self-help groups (SHGs), each offering an array of local and traditional delicacies prepared under strict hygiene standards.

The initiative aims to boost community-driven self-employment and economic development.

Addressing the gathering, Upreti emphasised the importance of such ventures in enhancing food safety, supporting local producers, and encouraging responsible street food consumption.

Khau Galli is expected to become a popular culinary and cultural hotspot for locals and tourists alike, the minister added.

The project is funded by the National Health Mission under the Union Health Ministry and is being implemented by the Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC). PTI COR MNB
