New Delhi, Apr 17 (PTI) Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has supported the concept of National Legislative Index (NLI) advocated by Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, an Assembly Secretariat statement said on Friday.

Tamang has extended strong support to the proposed NLI, which is an initiative aimed at benchmarking the performance of state legislatures across the country, it said.

In a letter to Gupta, Tamang appreciated the vision behind the initiative and steps towards strengthening the legislative institution, the statement said.

“The NLI is a structured, comparative framework for assessing legislative performance across states on parameters such as sittings, working hours, debate productivity, and committee effectiveness, thereby promoting transparency, self-assessment, the adoption of best practices, and healthy competition among legislatures,” it read.

Tamang noted that the idea of benchmarking legislatures on parameters such as productivity, transparency, and innovation is both timely and necessary, the statement said.

Commending the efforts of Gupta in advancing this initiative, the chief minister stressed that it will improve the quality and effectiveness of legislative governance in India. PTI VIT APL
