Gangtok, Aug 13 (PTI) Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Thursday called for a united effort to transform Pakyong into a model district, identifying infrastructure, healthcare, tourism and public services as key priorities for its next phase of development.

Tamang was addressing a gathering at Government Senior Secondary School, Mamring, during a pre-Independence Day celebration and football tournament organised by the Independence Day Celebration Committee (IDCC), Rhenock constituency.

Pakyong became a separate district in December 2021.

The chief minister highlighted the progress made since its establishment and said coordinated efforts by elected representatives, officials and the public were necessary to take the district forward.

He highlighted major projects coming up in the district, including the district hospital, the new district administrative centre and the Chief Minister’s Model School at Assam Lingzey, describing them as important additions to the district’s institutional and public infrastructure.

Tamang said the government was focusing on improving urban amenities, healthcare facilities, tourism infrastructure and road connectivity in Pakyong.

He also said the government was committed to strengthening public services and extending assistance to patients requiring support for treatment.

Calling for greater coordination among public representatives, the CM said development could not be achieved in isolation and urged elected representatives to work together with a common vision for the district.

He stressed the importance of unity and collective responsibility, calling upon representatives and the people to work towards making Pakyong a model district.

He recalled the state’s progress over the past five decades and credited the people for their continued contribution to Sikkim’s development.

He said the state’s progress had been achieved through the collective efforts of its people and emphasised the need to carry forward the spirit of unity and responsibility as Sikkim moves into the next phase of its development.

Tamang appealed to people to participate in the state-level Tiranga Yatra on August 14, saying public participation would add to the spirit of the Independence Day celebrations.

The programme also saw the felicitation of the CM by the Rhenock Tourism Development Society and IDCC 2026 for his contribution to the promotion and development of tourism in different parts of the constituency.

The organisers acknowledged his role in supporting local livelihoods, community development, economic self-reliance and public welfare.

Minister for Education, Sports and Youth Affairs, Law and Parliamentary Affairs and MLA Namcheybong Raju Basnet; Minister for Agriculture, Horticulture, AH&VS and Fisheries and MLA Chujachen Puran Gurung; senior district officials, elected representatives, former MLAs, panchayat members and members of the public attended the programme. Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
