Mumbai, Jul 18 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed satisfaction over his government’s handling of the three-week-long monsoon session of the legislature, where 16 bills were passed, and on Friday accused the opposition of adopting a ‘shoot and scoot’ approach.
Talking to reporters after both houses of the legislature were prorogued in the evening, the CM said the Mahayuti government is committed to give a loan waiver to farmers.
“A loan waiver is a short-term measure. We have set up a committee to suggest long-term solutions to resolve agriculture stress and bring farmers out of debt,” Fadnavis said.
He said the highlight of the session was passing of a host of bills, including the special public security bill to tackle Left-wing extremism and those related to providing statutory status to SC/ST commission, setting up a separate authority for Nashik Kumbh Mela and mining authority for Gadchiroli, and bringing narcotics offences under the tough anti-organised crime law MCOCA.
Talking to reporters after both houses of the legislature were prorogued in the evening, the CM said supplementary demands worth Rs 57,000 crore were passed.
Supplementary demands are additional funds sought by the government over budgetary allocations.
He claimed opposition parties levelled baseless allegations against the Mahayuti government and took ‘shoot and scoot’ approach (making charges without following them up with proof).
Notably, shoot and scoot is a military tactic involving quickly relocating after firing to avoid enemy retaliation.
Fadnavis, who holds the home portfolio, averred questions were asked by opposition parties based on false information as they didn’t have any issues to raise in the legislature.
To a question, the CM said Maharashtra has received 93 per cent (of the normal rainfall during monsoon season) so far. Reservoirs have ample water stock and the kharif season will be good.
He noted 12,500 objections and suggestions regarding clauses and provisions were received by the legislature’s joint select committee on the security bill, which has been criticised by the opposition parties as “oppressive, ambiguous and open to misuse”.
Some members are speaking without reading the bill, its clauses and provisions, the CM maintained.
Asked about rechristening Islampur town in Sangli district in western Maharashtra as Ishwarpur, Fadnavis maintained the original name has been restored.
The Islampur assembly constituency is represented by opposition NCP (SP)’s MLA Jayant Patil, a former minister.
“There is no question of asking Jayant Patil (over Islampur’s name change) because he is not a part of the government,” he said.
To a question on delay in naming guardian ministers of Nashik and Raigad districts, the CM said the issue will be taken up at “appropriate time”.
Development work (in the two districts) has not stopped due to delay in appointing their guardian ministers, he argued.
The Shiv Sena and NCP, constituents of the BJP-led ruling Mahayuti coalition, are at loggerheads over the appointment of guardian ministers Nashik and Raigad districts. PTI MR RSY
