Godda, Jun 24 (PTI) Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan on Saturday said self-help groups (SHGs) were boosting the state’s rural economy and leading to women empowerment.
Participating in a ‘Lok Samvad’ programme here, he requested more women to join the SHGs and take benefits of various government schemes.
“I am happy to learn that over 1 lakh women have joined the SHGs in the district which has led to their empowerment and resulted in better living standards of their families,” he said.
Out of 2.78 lakh SHGs in 30,000 villages spread across 24 districts, banks have extended Rs 6,511 crore credit to 2.26 lakh SHGs.
Praising the impact of SHGs, a member, who shared her success story before the Governor, said, “The financial condition of my family was bad. After I joined the group, I took a loan and started goat rearing and also opened a grocery shop. Now, I am earning up to Rs 20,000 a month and sending my children to good schools.” The Governor also expressed satisfaction over the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). He said, “I am extremely happy to know that more than 50,000 houses have been constructed under the scheme. Our aim is that every homeless person should have his own house.” A statement from the Raj Bhavan said the Governor also interacted with students of Kasturba Gandhi School, which has been accorded the status of ‘School of Excellence’, and urged them to study hard and excel in various streams.
“In the past, I have established dialogues with residents of more than 1,000 villages across 21 districts, covering a distance of 7,000 km. I have become aware of the status of implementation of various schemes and the problems of people,” the statement said quoting the Governor.
Prior to Godda, he had visited Sahibganj and expressed satisfaction over implementation of the PM housing scheme.
