Palghar (Maharashtra), Sep 11 (PTI) Local Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders on Friday took strong exception to a circular issued by the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation requesting the closure of meat and fish shops during the Paryushan Parva observed by the Jain community.
Sena (UBT) Virar city unit chief Vivek Pawar and others met municipal officials and warned of an agitation if the corporation tried to shut non-vegetarian hotels and meat-fish shops.
Civic officials, however, made it clear that there was no order to close meat and fish shops.
The row over the circular followed the backlash against an advisory by a school run by BJP MLA Narendra Mehta in neighbouring Thane district which requested parents to not pack foods with root vegetables like onion and garlic in children’s lunchboxes during the Paryushan period. The school on Thursday withdrew the advisory.
Pawar said that while his party respects all religious traditions, it will not tolerate administrative orders disrupting the livelihoods of the local Agari and Koli fishing communities.
