Shillong, Apr 30 (PTI) The self-enumeration phase of Census 2027 will begin in Meghalaya from May 1, followed by house-listing operations later in the month, an official said on Thursday.

Director of Census Operations, Meghalaya, Biswajit Pegu, said the upcoming census will be a landmark exercise, being India’s first fully digital census.

“For the first time, the entire Census process from enumeration to data analysis will be conducted digitally using mobile applications and the Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS) portal,” he told reporters.

He said citizens will have the option to undertake self-enumeration through an online portal from May 1 to May 15.

“This facility allows individuals to fill in their household details, which will subsequently be verified by enumerators during house-to-house visits,” Pegu said.

According to him, the House Listing Operations (HLO) will be conducted from May 16 to June 14, during which enumerators will collect data on housing conditions, assets and basic amenities through a structured questionnaire.

Highlighting the benefits of digitisation, he said, “The digital transformation will enhance transparency, improve data accuracy and enable faster processing for timely publication of results.” Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases, with the Population Enumeration scheduled for February 2027 and the reference date set as March 1, 2027.

Pegu said the exercise is being conducted under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948 and Census Rules, 1990, with robust safeguards in place to ensure data confidentiality. “Individual and household-level data will not be disclosed, and only aggregated data will be released,” he added.

Around 9,000 enumerators and supervisors will be deployed across the state, supported by a multi-layered monitoring mechanism.

Joint Director Subhasish Chatterjee said a national toll-free helpline has been launched to assist citizens. “The helpline will provide guidance on census procedures, address queries and ensure people receive accurate and timely information,” he said.

Officials urged citizens to actively participate in the self-enumeration process and extend full cooperation to enumerators to ensure accurate and reliable data for planning and development. PTI JOP RG
