New Delhi, Apr 30 (PTI) Taking strong note of an objectionable social media post by a lawyer on women’s quota in bar bodies, the Supreme Court on Thursday initiated suo motu criminal contempt proceedings against him, asking why his licence to practise law not be revoked.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi issued a show-cause notice to Vibhas Kumar Jha, a practising advocate at Rohini district courts, after taking cognizance of his post on Facebook.
Jha in his post, now deleted, made objectionable remarks against women, a few scheduled castes and the apex court order granting 33 per cent representation to women advocates in state bar councils and bar associations across the country.
On Thursday, the CJI asked Jha to reply as to why his bar licence should not be cancelled and he not be restrained from practising as a lawyer.
“If the advocate does not co-operate let bailable warrants be issued against him. Let him also place his law degree on record on the next date,” the CJI said. PTI SKM SJK SJK SAP SAP
