Mumbai: Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, who sustained knife wounds after fighting off a burglar in his Bandra home late Wednesday night, has undergone surgery and is now out of danger.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Police released the suspect’s CCTV image captured from Saif’s house. The suspect is seen walking down the stairs with a backpack on his shoulder.

The attacker was booked under Sections 311 (robbery or dacoity with the intention of causing grievous hurt or death), 312 (attempt to commit robbery or dacoity while armed with a deadly weapon), 331(4) (house-trespass or house-breaking at night with the intention of committing a crime), 331(6) (house-breaking or lurking house-trespass at night after preparing to cause harm), and 331(7) (causing grievous hurt while committing house-breaking or lurking house-trespass) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, according to the police

Saif is still in intensive care at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital and will be shifted to a cabin in a day or two, doctors said.

Lilavati chief operating officer Dr Neeraj Uttamani told the media that the actor was doing very well after surgery on his multiple wounds. “Recovery is going on… He is in the ICU, may be in a day or two he will be shifted to a ward,” the doctor said. “The injuries were deeper but our doctors and our medical team treated him very well.”

Dr Nitin Dange, who operated on Saif, said the actor’s spine injury was severe as the knife was lodged inside.

The doctor said Saif, who was admitted around 3 am Thursday, sustained major injuries to the thoracic spine due to the knife.

“Surgery was performed to remove the knife and also repair the leaking spinal fluid. There were two other deep wounds, one on his left hand and right side of his neck, which were treated by the plastic surgery team,” Dr Dange added.

Saif was completely out of danger and was recovering, according to the doctors.

The actor’s team also released a statement, stating that he is out of danger. “He is currently in recovery and the doctors are monitoring his progress. All family members are safe and the police are investigating the incident,” it added.

Saif was attacked by a burglar in his 12th floor Bandra apartment around 2 am on Thursday morning. According to the police, the intruder sneaked into the Satguru Sharan apartment when the actor was sleeping, but was soon confronted by the maid. The actor intervened to diffuse the situation, but the burglar stabbed him before fleeing the flat.
