Mumbai, Sep 11 (PTI) A court here on Friday rejected the plea of a Bangladesh national, held for stabbing actor Saif Ali Khan, to plead guilty and said the accused will face trial in the case.
Khan was repeatedly stabbed with a knife inside his 12th floor apartment in upscale Bandra on January 16 last year. Mohammad Shariful Islam was arrested two days after the incident and is currently in judicial custody.
Last month, the accused had filed an application expressing his willingness to plead guilty, and had sought leniency from the court.
However, Additional Sessions Judge G P Deshmukh didn’t accept his request and said trial will proceed against him.
The matter has been adjourned to September 24 for recording of evidence.
Mohammad Shariful Islam has been charged under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for robbery accompanied by the use of a deadly weapon, causing grievous hurt, house trespass as well as relevant sections of Foreigners Act and Passport (Entry into India) Rules.
After the attack, the 56-year-old actor underwent emergency surgery at the Lilavati Hospital and was discharged after five days. PTI AVI BNM
