Jaipur, Sep 26 (PTI) Rajasthan Police have arrested another accused who allegedly helped a cyber fraud gang arrange bank accounts, documents and accommodation for its members, taking the total number of arrests in a Rs 6.80-crore cyber fraud case to 12, police said on Saturday.

The accused, identified as Laxman Singh alias Neeshu, a resident of Bikaner, allegedly arranged bank accounts for cyber fraudsters and helped them stay in hotels, Additional Director General of Police (Cyber Crime) Vijay Kumar Singh said.

The fraudsters used mule bank accounts, ATMs, cheques, UPI, QR codes, digital wallets and cryptocurrency, including USDT, to receive, conceal and move the defrauded money through multiple layers, he said.

Police said fake or mule bank accounts, ATM cards, SIM cards and passbook kits were allegedly arranged through Telegram groups. Money received in these accounts was withdrawn or transferred through ATMs, cheques, UPI, QR codes and cash deposit machines before being routed through multiple bank accounts and converted into cryptocurrency.

The accused were allegedly connected with members of the cyber fraud gang through a Telegram group named “F2F Jaipur Delhi”, police said.

According to police, Laxman Singh arranged a room at a hotel in Reengus for a person identified as Sandeep Kumar on August 23. He allegedly later obtained banking documents, an ATM card, chequebook, identification documents and a SIM linked to a bank account from him.

The SIM was allegedly used to activate the bank’s mobile application, following which the account was used to receive and transfer proceeds of cyber fraud, police said.

The case relates to a Rs 6.80-crore cyber fraud registered in Jaipur in August.

Cyber criminals allegedly gained access to the computer system of a private company and manipulated WhatsApp Web to impersonate one of its directors. They used the director’s name and profile picture and recreated earlier conversations to gain the confidence of the company’s accounts head.

Posing as the director, the fraudsters asked the accounts head to make urgent payments, following which Rs 6.80 crore was transferred to three bank accounts on August 24.

The company later found that none of its directors had authorised the transactions and lodged a complaint with the Central Cyber Crime Police Station on August 25. PTI SDA NB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
