New Delhi, Jul 4 (PTI) Police arrested a 22-year-old alleged member of the Rohit Lamba gang for his involvement in a knife attack on a rival gang member’s aide in Najafgarh, saying the assault was part of an ongoing gang rivalry.
Police said on Saturday that the accused, Aditya Kumar, and his associates, Rohit Lamba and Ritik Thakur, attacked Afjal on June 26 because they suspected he had tipped off Monu about Lamba’s hideouts.
Afjal is suspected of being associated with rival gangster Mohit Bhardwaj, alias Monu.
Police said after committing the crime in southwest Delhi, Aditya, a Dharampura resident in Najafgarh, had been absconding and changing hideouts to evade arrest after his associates were apprehended.
According to police, on that day, the accused confronted Afjal and demanded to know Monu’s whereabouts. When Afjal denied having any information, Rohit allegedly pointed a pistol at his head while Ritik pulled out a knife. Police said Aditya allegedly restrained Afjal as Rohit and Ritik attacked him, inflicting injuries on both his legs. The accused fled the scene after noticing a motorcycle entering the lane.
Subsequently, the Najafgarh police station registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police said the attack stemmed from an ongoing rivalry between Lamba and Monu, who is listed as a bad character at the Najafgarh police station.
Police said about a month and a half ago, Monu and his associates allegedly attacked Lamba with a knife and had been absconding since then. Police had been tracking Aditya since the arrest of Lamba and Ritik on June 28, following a brief exchange of fire with local police.
Acting on a tip-off, the team laid a trap near Dwarka Mor and apprehended Aditya after a brief chase when he allegedly tried to escape. During interrogation, Aditya told police he studied until Class 10 and came in contact with Lamba about three years ago while working at a Reliance Store.
