Mumbai, Aug 28 (PTI) A 70-year-old retired senior superintendent of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) was allegedly duped of Rs 38.5 lakh by cyber fraudsters by promising high returns on investments in the stock market, police said here on Friday.

The complainant came across a Facebook advertisement of the accused who operated under the name ‘Finance Minister Of India’, an official said. He clicked the advertisement and filled a form. Soon afterwards, he received a WhatsApp call from a person identified as Ansu, who claimed to be a representative of a company called BXBMarket.com.

The accused connected him with ‘finance manager Nadeem’ and ‘senior manager Kundan’. They persuaded him to open a trading account on their website by promising huge profits.

Initially, the victim was asked to deposit Rs 20,456. Subsequently, between April and June, he transferred a total of Rs 38.50 lakh as instructed.

In July, the trading account showed substantial profits in dollars, and Rs 67,711 was transferred back to the victim. However, when he tried to withdraw the entire amount, ‘Kundan’ allegedly cited technical issues.

About a week later, the victim found that his trading account had been reduced to zero. When the accused demanded more money, the victim realised that he had been duped and approached police through the cybercrime helpline.

Further investigation is underway. PTI ZA KRK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
