Kasganj: Barely 24 hours after the gruesome murder of retired additional district magistrate (ADM) Rajendra Kashyap in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj, the police have arrested his relative and staffer Dharmendra Kashyap. According to the police, the accused has confessed that he killed the former ADM to hide the several thefts he had committed at the latter’s guest house.

Kasganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Ankita Sharma told The Print that the murder was committed early Tuesday at the former ADM’s guest house on Soron Road in Kasganj. A crowbar allegedly used to commit the murder was recovered by the police after interrogating Dharmendra Kashyap, she added.

The SP said that Dharmendra, a resident of Nagla Kanchan, is a relative of the deceased and had been employed by the former ADM to take care of his guest house. When Rajendra confronted him about thefts at the guest house, the accused allegedly murdered him.

The police have also recovered an inverter and batteries allegedly stolen from the guest house when the former ADM had gone to his home in Ghaziabad.

SP Sharma said Rajendra’s son Shubham Kashyap and other family members had complained to the police about repeated thefts at the guest house being a possible motive for murder, but did not express any suspicions about Dharmendra.

However, the Sadar Kotwali police, along with the crime branch and surveillance branch worked together and solved the crime in under 24 hours, she added.
