Chandigarh, Aug 3 (PTI) Rebel Akali MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali on Monday raised the issue of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha and also questioned the AAP government about the whereabouts of three former policemen convicted for his abduction and murder.
During the Zero Hour on the first day of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha’s Monsoon session here, Ayali spoke about Diljit Dosanjh’s film “Satluj”, based on Khalra’s life, and alleged its screening was stopped by the Centre.
Referring to the militancy period in Punjab, Ayali alleged that thousands of youths were killed in fake police encounters and their bodies were cremated as unclaimed.
Khalra collected details regarding the cremation of thousands of unidentified bodies in Punjab and later he was also abducted and killed, he said.
Ayali said recently, Khalra’s wife Paramjit Kaur Khalra asked the Punjab government about the whereabouts of three convicted former police officials — former deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Jaspal Singh and former sub-inspectors Satnam Singh and Jasbir Singh.
“Where are they at present? They were given bail and at present, there was no information about them,” said Ayali.
The Akali Dal Waris Punjab De leader said despite Khalra’s wife asking about the whereabouts of these former cops, no information has yet been provided.
The government should make it clear where these convicted ex-cops are, he said in the House.
In November 2005, a CBI court sentenced former DSP Jaspal Singh and another cop to life imprisonment for the abduction and murder of Khalra. His conviction was upheld by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2007 and the Supreme Court in 2011.
Singh was released on interim bail in 2023. However, his current whereabouts remain unknown.
Former sub-inspectors Satnam Singh and Jasbir Singh were also convicted in connection with this case.
Khalra was abducted in front of his house in Amritsar in September 1995. He was later found to have been murdered, though his body was never found.
