Gangtok, Apr 17 (PTI) Thousands of women joined a rally in Sikkim’s capital Gangtok on Friday in support of the Women’s Reservation Act.
The procession began at Tata Stand in Deorali and culminated at Paljor Stadium, passing through Pani House, Metro Point and Hospital Dara.
Members of civil society groups, government employees, and political activists were among those who took part in the rally.
Participants carried the national flag and raised slogans in support of the legislation, which provides 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
SKM’s Upper Burtuk MLA Kala Rai, one of the organisers, said the law was a matter of pride for the nation, and women in Sikkim had come together to thank PM Narendra Modi for fulfilling a long-pending demand.
She said around 25,000 women from all six districts of the state joined the rally. PTI COR SOM
