New Delhi: The Rajasthan Police Thursday arrested an Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer for allegedly taking a bribe from a businessman with the assurance that he would stop all investigation against him in a chit fund case.
The officer, Naval Kishore Meena, was taken into custody after the state police’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) allegedly caught a middleman who worked for him.
The ACB set a trap for the intermediary, Babu Lal Meena, who they caught “red-handed” taking Rs 15 lakh from the businessman on the ED officer’s behalf.
Naval Kishore Meena was probing the businessman in a chit fund case in Manipur and had allegedly told him to pay up to avoid arrest or the seizure of his properties.
The businessman complained to the ACB’s Jaipur unit on 20 October, claiming that the officer had asked for a total of Rs 17 lakh to “close” his case, Additional Director General Hemant Priyadarshy said.
The police immediately put their numbers under surveillance and managed to catch Babu Lal Meena as he allegedly accepted the bribe from the businessman.
Babu Lal Meena, who is a junior assistant in the Khairthal-Tijara district registrar’s office, confessed that he worked for the ED officer, a source told ThePrint.
The ACB, which made the arrest, is in the “process” of registering a First Information Report (FIR) on corruption charges, the source added.
ED spokesperson Satyabrat Kumar told ThePrint that they would not be able to comment further as all the facts of the case had not yet been ascertained.
